Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC) is delighted to announce the return of the Methane Leadership Summit in 2025. Scheduled for April 15th and 16th, this premier two-day conference will convene at the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, gathering a broad spectrum of participants from the energy sector. Attendees will include representatives from government organizations, regulatory bodies, energy-producing companies, service and supply companies, start-ups, innovators, research centers, and academic institutions.
The summit will tackle the pressing challenge of reducing methane emissions within the Canadian energy industry, a critical issue given the urgency of climate change mitigation efforts. Recognizing the ambitious reduction targets set by governments and industry, the Methane Leadership Summit aims to foster a collaborative environment where experts and stakeholders can share knowledge, exchange insights, and drive action. By focusing on technological advancements and adopting new practices, the event seeks to catalyze industry-wide efforts to meet and surpass emission reduction goals.
Building on the success of PTAC's annual methane forums, which have consistently been at full capacity since its inception in 2018, the Methane Leadership Summit 2025 promises to be an engaging and insightful gathering. The Government of Alberta, in partnership with the Government of Canada, will be leading a delegation of companies to go to Africa Energy Forum.
The Africa Energy Forum is an event focused on the clean tech and renewable energy sector. Over the last 25 years, it has earned a reputation a meaningful gathering place for decision-makers in the African energy industry to form partnerships, identify opportunities and move the industry forward. Africa's rising energy sector is essential to the success of the continent's emerging industries, including a critical minerals sector crucial to the world's green energy transition.
The event itself is taking place between Tuesday June 25 to Friday June 28 - and there will be a day of pre-event programming taking place on June 24.

Dr. Khriashchevska received her M.Sc. in geology in 1998 and her Ph.D. in 2001 from Moscow State University. She spent six years with Naftogaz of Ukraine as Deputy Chief Geologist in charge of geological projects in the Black Sea region, Egypt, Algeria and the UAE. Since 2010 she has been heading exploration projects for various international oil & gas companies at SPK-Geoservice and SPK-GEO LLC.
Oksana has published over 30 papers on the geology and tectonics of the Black Sea region.

Hydrogen and the Transition to Net-Zero Energy Systems
Canada and at least 72 other nations have committed to net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Achieving that will require replacing the C-based energy carriers that currently fuel the global economy (i.e. gasoline, diesel, natural gas etc) with zero emission alternatives (e.g. electricity, hydrogen), produced with little or no emissions. While this might sound threatening to Alberta, the province is international renown as one of the lowest cost producers of low carbon ‘blue’ hydrogen (i.e. hydrogen produced from fossil fuels but with the CO2 byproduct captured and geological stored). In this presentation, I will discuss the magnitude of the opportunity and the possible transition pathway to a Canada hydrogen economy, led by Alberta.

The oil and gas industry has once again found itself moving toward a low cost, efficient and sustainable future. As such, existing workflows have to be modernized by incorporating innovative ideas, new technologies have to show improved efficiency and every application has to resolve a particular social, environmental and economic problem. So, each speaker will address one particular major topic under development in Canada today.
Data quality improvements through innovations in seismic acquisition and reinterpretation of legacy seismic data are a couple of examples that will be covered showing how costs can be optimized while enhancing data quality and value of the interpretation.
Quantitative interpretation to provide deeper insight into subsurface reservoirs, machine learning application and adopting an integrated work flow for field development will show how new applications and repurposing old techniques with new perspective can solve modern petroleum exploration problems and impact business decisions.

We offer monthly free brown-bag lunchtime workshops and special social events. It starts at noon with a 5 minute introduction, followed by a 10 minute “Rock Shot” warm-up and the 30 minute main presentation, which leaves the last 15 minutes for networking. Upcoming events are detailed below.
The “Rocks Shots” could be anything interesting and should be light. In the past we have had travelogues, world cultural heritage relationships between geology and beverages, and quick geoscience knowledge. The main technical presentation should cover geoscientific and/or broadly oil and gas related topics.

SIMON HATFIELD
CEO of WZR Develpment ULC
Mr. Simon Hatfield is the Chief Executive Officer of WZR Development ULC (WesternZagros). He has over 40 years of experience in the international and domestic petroleum industry and has held technical, managerial and executive positions with Imperial Oil, Exxon Production Research Company, Petro-Canada, Chauvco Resources, Talisman Energy and Western Oil Sands.
Mr. Hatfield has conducted business throughout the Americas, North and West Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia, and has extensive experience in Iraq since 1995. He was the catalyst for the formation of WesternZagros and led the technical and business process which led to the signing and ratification of the Company’s Production Sharing Contracts.
Mr. Hatfield holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Geology with Physics and a Master of Science degree in Geology. He has completed the Executive Development Program at the University of Calgary and is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors.
KE LOVAN
Managing Director Exploration at WZR Development ULC
Mr. Ke Lovan is the Managing Director Exploration at WZR Development ULC (WesternZagros). He brings over 20 years of domestic and international oil and gas experience that includes technical and managerial positions with Goodwell Petroleum, GEDCO, Paradigm Geophysical Corp., Sproule International Limited and Western Oil Sands.
Mr. Lovan’s expertise includes structural and stratigraphic plays in carbonate and clastic environments and advanced 3D interpretation, visualization, modeling, seismic characterization and geostatistical analysis. He played a crucial role in the discovery of oil and gas resources in excess of 700 MMBOE recoverable on WesternZagros’s two blocks in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
Mr. Lovan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysics from the University of Calgary and is a member of APEGGA, CSEG, SEG, AAPG, and EAGE.

He will walk through historical examples and insights of how successful Junior E&P companies have utilized smaller and flexible surface production facilities to gain an early understanding of the reservoir, generate early cash flows and test the local product market, all while maximizing the value of the capital invested. The Alberta International Development Office (AIDO) invites you to learn about Local Content in International Business Development including an understanding of the purpose and relevance of local content and how local content can help your company meet sustainability and anti-corruption requirements. This speaker series will provide participants with an understanding of the opportunities and benefits of local content in international business development as well as strategies for risk mitigation and implementation of local content. Participants are invited to join the session in-person in Calgary. Note that we have limited space in our boardroom in Calgary so it will be on a first-come, first serve basis.
